St. Joseph's School Yorkville seeks a dynamic Academic Dean who embodies and promotes the school's mission statement. The Academic Dean assists and supports the Principal in Catholic Identity, academics and instruction, data analysis, and teacher relations.

  • Practicing Catholic with a strong commitment to the principles of Catholic education.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience on the elementary level
  • Have school administration experience, preferred
  • Have a Master's Degree in Education, or working toward degree
  • Have New York State Certification in Teaching or School Administration and Supervision, or demonstrate eligibility for certification
  • Possess strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Possess competency in technology for written communication and reports

Duties and Responsibilities: The role of the Academic Dean involves, but is not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:


The Academic Dean will drive instruction and build a school culture of academic excellence and a scholarly attitude toward learning:

  • Mentor and support new teachers and extend the new teacher orientation
  • Mentor and support all teachers to develop an in-depth understanding of our instructional design, provide an exemplar teaching model for educators, and increase their effectiveness as instructional leaders
  • Develop and run professional development at faculty meetings/conferences based on school and archdiocese initiatives
  • Use student achievement data (MAP, NYS exams, and blending learning platforms) and student work to drive daily and long-term instructional decisions, coordinate the Archdiocesan Data Day and MAP testing in collaboration with the Principal
  • Monitor progress of students and teachers
  • Build strong relationships with parents (by way of running and presenting group parent meetings), students, and teachers by emphasizing the importance of creating investment in attendance, homework, school culture initiatives, and overall academic success 
  • Plan and execute the School Program, alongside the Principal, from identifying goals to carrying them out effectively 
  • Co-teach as part of mentoring

 The Academic Dean will develop teachers' excellence:

  • Teach faculty to plan and intellectually understand content at a high level
  • Give feedback and coach teachers on lesson implementation to improve academic outcomes
  • Lead and facilitate regular grade-band meetings to promote engaged learning and teaching
  • Work in collaboration with the Principal for faculty meetings from preparation to post-meeting follow up
  • Teach faculty to build relationships with students and their families and hold these critical constituencies responsible for outstanding academic and character development
  • Model high standard of professionalism

 The Academic Dean will manage organizational systems and safety:

  • Establish a safe and secure learning environment
  • Act as coordinator for all state, Archdiocesan, and standardized assessments, working with the Principal for ordering, distribution, implementation, and analysis of testing program
  • Attend meetings relating to curriculum, some of which may be outside of school hours, and network with external community to promote the school

 The Academic Dean will work:

  • Maintain a full time schedule
  • A calendar year of two full weeks before school opens and two full weeks in beginning of summer
